THis WAS The FIrst Car Of The World Introduced in 1886

While many people are hung up on the projected launch of new hybrid and electric cars such as the Tesla Model S, there is a concept car that is likewise in the works by Mercedes. The concept car is the F-Cell Roadster, an emissions-free vehicle whose body is patterned after the brand’s 1886 Benz Patent Motor Car.
It was created as a “training project,” meaning the company essentially used junior-level employees to create the concept. Nice to see that while some automakers are sweating things out, at least one has plenty of time to goof off with style.

Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer of luxury automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks. It is currently a division of the parent company, Daimler AG (formerly DaimlerChrysler AG), after previously being owned by Daimler-Benz. Mercedes-Benz has its origins in Karl Benz's] 1 creation of the first petrol-powered motorcycle in January 1886,andby Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a 1873 Bolle steam-engine automobile by the addition of a petrol engine the same year. The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. In the early 1900s, Mercedes styling ran the gamut from conservative limousines and landaulets to dashing phaetons and open two-seaters. None, however, approached the style of this one-of-a-kind 1911 Mercedes 37/90 skiff, one of the most exotic Mercedes ever created. The avenue des Champs-Elyses atelier of Henri Labourdette pioneered the exquisite wooden skiff torpedo design, which became popular in the 1910s and remained so through the 1920s. The elegant yacht-like triple-layer body was created by criss-crossing layers of mahogany over a ribbed frame, then applying a third horizontal layer on top. To preserve the rigidity, doors were kept as small as possible in number and size. Apart from its attractiveness, a skiff body was light, normally weighing about 400 pounds. Produced from 1910 through 1914, the 37/90 chassis was powered by a four-cylinder engine of 9,530 cc and delivering 90 hp at 1,100 rpm. The inline engine had two blocks of two cylinders with three overhead valves per cylinder and a single camshaft high in the block. A four-speed gear shifter was mounted outside the body, delivering power to the rear chain drive. Daimler estimated the average top speed at 70 mph, though lightweight roadsters could reach nearly 100 mph. According to research conducted by the current owner, this 37/90 hp chassis was delivered to American hat maker G. Henry Stetson. Fitted with coachwork, it was delivered to his Philadelphia residence from the Mercedes dealer in New York City and cost $18,000. The original body was removed from the chassis in 1922 and a new Cape Top body built by Camden Coachworks in New Jersey.

Mercedes Memories in Maastricht
The story is well-known: On January 29 1886 Carl Benz filed a patent application for his three-wheel "gas engine-powered vehicle. In 1926 Benz merged with Daimler, who had named his car after Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of his first big client, thus forming Mercedes-Benz. The emblems of both brands had already been combined a year earlier; the three-pointed star of the Mercedes with the laurel wreath of Benz became the emblem we still know today, a version of which is seen on the photo above taken in May 1925.
Benz’ 1886 patent is generally regarded as the automobile's "birth certificate", making 2011 the 125th birthday of Mercedes Benz. The first event of the year that kicks off the celebrations will be Interclassics & Topmobiel, starting this Friday in Maastricht. There will be a fantastic array of antique and classic Mercedes-Benz’ on display. Well worth a visit. PreWarCar will be there also. A good opportunity to come and talk to us.

Early vehicles and projects at Benz and DMG

- Benz Velo: first volume produced vehicle in automotive history
- A comprehensive range of bodies was available for the Benz 8/18 hp
- Mercedes 6/25/40 hp: a compact motor car featuring novel engine technology

In 1886, Carl Benz invented the automobile. His patent motor car was the first step towards individual mobility as we know it today. Following the successful introduction of the ‘Viktoria’ and ‘Vis-à-Vis’ models in 1892, he made a significant contribution to popularising the new type of vehicle with the Benz Velo in 1894: this small car became the first volume produced vehicle in automotive history, with some 1200 units being produced.
